Optimum Temperature
What is the best temperature to store my bin during the fermentation process? I live in the Midwest and have been storing the bin in my basement which gets very cold. Is the temperature a significant factor in the composting process?
Thanks for the question. During fermentation the bokashi bucket should be kept at room temperature away from direct sunlight. Extremes in temperature can harm the bokashi microbes and result in a failed bucket. We would recommend keeping your bokashi bucket indoors to create the best conditions for your bokashi microbes to thrive.
After the 2 week fermentation is complete, the bokashi microbes will become dormant until buried in the soil or compost pile. During this dormant phase, the bokashi microbes are more tolerant to cooler temperatures but the pre-compost should not be allowed to freeze as this can kill some of the beneficial microbes.
Happy composting 🙂
