flies-in-soil-factory

RJ asked 5 years ago

I\\\’ve buried two batches of bokashi pre-compost in my soil factory now. For the first batch, I noticed flies in the soil factory and after reading suggestions on this site, I added a paper bag on top of the soil to absorb moisture. I waited a few weeks before checking and the flies were gone. I buried the second batch over two months ago and placed newspaper on top of the soil. Last week, I checked the soil factory and there were still many flies. What should I do to get rid of the flies? I\\\’d like to use the soil for my indoor plants, but don\\\’t want my apartment to be infested with flies.

Flies do tend to become a problem in many compost bins at this time of year; it seems like the heat brings them out. To deter flies during the hottest time of the year, add some extra soil on top of your soil factory. Once any flies have dissipated, the soil should be fine to use in indoor plants.
