fermented bokashi pre-compost attract lot of pill bugs

Bokashi CommunityCategory: bokashi composting questionsfermented bokashi pre-compost attract lot of pill bugs
Yuling Chen asked 10 months ago

This is the second year of my veg. garden and I keep using bokashi for my veg plant (bokashi tea) and veg bed soil. The result is great and I love bokashi. But the pill bugs also love fermented bokashi pre-compost so much. I burry fermented bokashi pre-compost in the veg bed soil during winter and early spring while the soil temperature is not warm enough for planting. This year I notice that there are a lot of pill bugs in my veg bed and they eat my seedlings, especially the bean seedlings. Is there any way to prevent the situation?
Thanks a lot for the guidance.

Some of the best things we can do to deter pests in the garden being attracted to the Bokashi pre-compost are:
1) let the foods sit and ferment in the bokashi bin for an additional week (or more is even better). This will ensure a more thorough ferment, which will help deter the pests.
2) dig the Bokashi pre-compost a little deeper into the garden. Digging it down a couple of extra inches will make a big difference to pests and rodents being able to access it.
3) break up and mix the Bokashi pre-compost into the soil before you fill the hole back in. Mixing it up nicely into the ground helps the garden biota access it more easily. This means it will assimilate into your soil faster, thereby preventing rodents and pests from accessing it.
