I want to start adding my bokashi to a compost bin – does the bin need to be open ended or have a base please?

A compost bin always works best if it has no bottom on it.  This allows for a free transfer of biota between the garden and the compost pile.  This will dramatically improve the effectiveness, speed and quality of the pile.

Thank you Nicki. I thought i read about a three box system on this site but i can’t find it again. If i used three bins, one full, one newly started and one with garden soil for layering with bokashi would the three bins be best without bottoms?

I’m not familiar with a three bokashi bin process.  You may be referring to what we call a ‘soil factory’ bin.  This is a completely separate bin from the bokashi bins, and is used primarily by people who do not have access to a garden.  Here is a blog post we have on how to do this:
