Bokashi drain

Mai asked 3 years ago

I have filled up my first Bokashi bucket and am waiting for the 14 days of its fermentation to complete.  In that time our family is going to go on vacation for a week, and we will be unable to drain the leachate every other day.  Is it possible to just leave the drain open during this time period of fermentation?  It would make it a lot easier….

Hi Mai,
Thanks for the question. No, we wouldn’t recommend you leaving the spigot open while you are away. Leaving the spigot open will allow air in to the bokashi bucket and may cause it to fail. Instead, we would suggest that you drain as much bokashi tea out of the bucket before you leave (while the spigot is open press down hard on the food waste to squeeze out any liquid, and tip the bucket to completely empty the reservoir).
Happy composting 🙂
