The instructions say to “be generous” but I have already run out of bran after only around 1 month of use, going through 3 whole bags and filling both of my bins. I generally put in enough so that the majority of food waste is totally covered. The store claims that 6 bags should be enough to last 1 year, how is this possible?
Thanks for your question. Yes, it does sound like you have been very generous with the bran. You only need to add a light sprinkling of the bran for each layer of food waste, we recommend around 1 -2 tablespoon of bokashi bran for each 1 inch layer of food waste. Each bag of bran will typically compost 4-6 bins of food waste (roughly 2-3 months of food waste for the average family).
You can never add too much bran, so no harm done by using more than is needed. And we would recommend that you are more generous with the bokashi bran at first while you get into a comfortable rhythm with bokashi composting.
Happy composting 🙂
