Why can meat go into bokashi, but not a regular compost bin?

Just wondering what makes the bokashi system effective for meat scraps. I have a regular compost bin that gets quite hot with grass clippings and other green waste. Curious to know why bokashi would work better for these items than my ordinary compost bin. Thanks!

Hi Freddie,

Thanks for your question. Below is a quick answer, for more information about composting meat in a bokashi composter vs a regular compost pile, this post may be helpful: https://bokashiliving.com/composting-meat-bones-and-cooked-food/

The main problem of composting meat in an ordinary compost bin is the harmful pathogens that can may be contained in the decomposing meat. These can be destroyed by high temperatures, but these are hard to achieve in a regular compost pile, particularly year round. Other problems include pests and foul odors.

However, adding meat to your bokashi composter helps with all three of these potential problems. Firstly, the bokashi microbes help to destroy harmful pathogens in your meat. Secondly, the majority of the bokashi composting process occurs in a sealed environment meaning that it does not produce foul odors or attract pests. And, finally, bokashi composting uses a fermentation (or pickling) process. This, again, means that no foul odors or produced and is not attractive to pests.

Hope that helps. Feel free to ask any other questions you may have.
Happy composting,
