I understand tea bags should not be added to the Bokashi bin, but can loose tea leaves?

Absolutely, loose tea leaves are great in your bokashi bin.

It is the bag of the tea bag that is often not compostable. Many tea bags include plastic within the fabric of the tea bag; that is why you may find tea bag ‘skeletons’ in your garden soil if you include tea bags in your bokashi bin. If you choose to add tea bags to your bokashi bin (I do!) you might want to consider the following:

1. Rip the tea bag before adding to your bin to speed up decomposition;
2. Buy compostable tea bags (I can’t remember the brand but do remember seeing this option in a store once for pre-filled compostable bags);
3. Sieving your compost after its finished its second stage and disposing of any non-composted tea bag skeletons;
4. Simply mix the tea bags back into the soil, they will disappear eventually.

Remember if you are adding tea bags to your garden soil, there is a small risk that you are adding (very small) quantities of plastic to your soil. Just something to consider.
