We had an old (1 year) bokashi bucket get mixed into the compost and I saw my dog eating it. Is bokashi compost toxic to dogs if they eat it?

Hi Michelle,

Bokashi bran and the bokashi composting process is completely harmless to wildlife.

Animals are not (usually!) attracted to the fermented waste; though your dog obviously thought otherwise!

There could be a risk to dogs if you had put something toxic to dogs in the bokashi bucket (such as chocolate). The contents of a fermented bokashi bucket are very acidic. I’m not a dog expert, but I’m guessing it may not agree with your dogs digestive system (a bit like if you or I are a whole jar of pickles!!)

Obviously, if you notice any changes in your dog get it checked out. Better safe than sorry.

Hope that helps
